More Righteous than the Scribes

More Righteous than the Scribes

Aug 03, 2014

Preacher: Rev. Steve Mattis

Series: The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached

Category: Sunday Sermons

Detail:

More Righteous than Scribes and Pharisees.

Matt. 5:17-20

Interpretive Lens: Matt. 4:17-25

Life in the Kingdom is through reliance upon Jesus and His Life.

Change your mind, heart & receive God’s rule!

The blessing of ordinary people with a Kingdom heart live as Salt and Light.

Matt. 5:1-20

Matt. 5:17-20

Who really has a Kingdom Heart?

These are transitional verses leading into the rest of Chapter 5. What does the Kingdom Heart look like?

The Kingdom Heart is one that has fully yielded to Jesus’ Lordship, and is fully enveloped and led by His Spirit.

The Scribes and Pharisees manipulated the law. Used it for their advantage. By it they dominated and oppressed people.

Jesus came to fulfill the Law. Every letter will be fulfilled. v 17-18

How did the Scribes and Pharisees, who were the “keepers of the Law,” actually break the law?

They did not have a “Kingdom Heart!”

Remember Jesus began his sermon teaching and preaching the Kingdom of heaven is at hand! v. 4:17

He invited everyone into God’s rule and reign!

Scribes and Pharisees chose religion rather that rule!

They chose law over Lordship!

They chose man’s way rather than God’s way; External appearance over Internal rule!

The kingdom of God is first and foremost about bringing one’s own heart under the rule and reign of heaven.

Lk. 17:20-21 The Pharisees asked Jesus when the kingdom of God would come...“For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.

Jesus put his finger on their problem. They were all about show, not about allowing God to rule in their hearts.

Matt. 23:1 “The Scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat...v. 5 “But all their works they do to be seen of men...” Externals

Lesson from the Dishwasher. Matt. 23:25f

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup but inside they are full of unrighteousness.”

“Blind Pharisees, first cleanse the inside of the cup, that the outside of may be clean also.”

Lesson from the Farmer Lk.6:44f

“Every tree is known by its fruit....A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good.”

POINT: When God rules in the heart, Holy Spirit produces the natural fruit of His Presence.

Scribes and the Pharisees tried to secure themselves by externals! We “exceed their righteousness” by the kingdom ruling in the inner dimensions of the heart.

Communion Celebration:

Prepare our hearts.

What is the condition of your heart?

What “idols” keep the Kingdom out?

What fears assert more influence than Jesus?

What part of your heart will you bring to Jesus as you take from him this morning?
