Jesus taught by contrasts: Old righteousness vrs. New righteousness of the heart.

Matt. 6:5-13

“The Community of Prayerful love.”

Jesus gives his disciples four (4) cautions or principles about prayer:

• Don’t pray to be seen by people! Vrs. 5
• Father is in secret, sees in secret. Vrs. 6
• Don’t use “vain repetition” – that won’t help. Vrs. 7
• Father knows your need before you ask. Vrs. 8

Ask in faith, believing His character!

• Jesus is not giving laws of prayer.
• Jesus is not giving a formula for prayer.
• Jesus is not giving a method of prayer.
• Jesus is not giving words to be used like superstitions. Just say these words!
• Jesus is giving a “model prayer.”
  “Pray LIKE this:” (Kingdom heart/relationship)

Our Father in the heaven(s), Hallowed be Your name. (Praise, honor, thanksgiving)

Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
